Pack Of Wolves is a Charlottesville-area band crafting an original blend of homemade songs infused with blues, power pop, blue-eyed soul, and a jam-band vibe. We pair these tuneful, heartfelt originals with off-the-beaten-path covers and hidden gems from great bands of the past.
Founded by Johnny as his return to the stage, the band unites seasoned players who've lived the music across decades of clubs, studios, and scenes—from Northeast hotspots to Southern stages.
The wolves are:
Johnny – Vocals, Rhythm & Slide Guitar, Songwriter (Founder) Johnny ignited Pack Of Wolves as his roaring return—a SAMMY Award winner from the Syracuse Area Music Awards and veteran of the buzzing Burlington, VT, and Syracuse, NY scenes. He built respect in bands like The Sportin' Johnsons (drums by Robert Crenshaw, brother of Marshall), the Rhythm Method, and Dark Hollow—sharing rooms with rising stars like Phish. Peers hailed him as a soulful singer, sharp songwriter, and solid guitarist.
In late-'90s Syracuse, he cut demos for the EP "What in the 90s?" with legends Gary Frenay and Arty Lenin (Flashcubes roots), engineered by Steve Feldman and partly produced by Syracuse icon Mark Doyle (multi-SAMMY winner, Jukin' Bone alum, Meat Loaf vet). Life shifted to family, but with kids grown, the fire returned. Johnny launched the band from a real estate client gig idea, then enlisted Syracuse graphics artist Elliot Mattice (ex-Dress Code) for the striking logo. As frontman, he delivers lean and melodic guitar lines, emotive vocals, and songs bringing elements of soul, blues, power pop wrapped up in memorable tunes.
Rob – Bass Guitar Rob lays down nearly 50 years of bass wisdom. It began with elementary string bass lessons, then bass guitar at 13 and his first band. After moving from NY to Sarasota, Florida, he became friendly with the owner of the well-known recording studio Electric Mountain Sound. Very quickly, Rob was invited to participate in the many studio jams with musicians and bands that came through. A peak thrill came in 1981 when the Allman Brothers Band set up camp at Electric Mountain Sound to rehearse for an upcoming tour and record a new album. During this period, Rob got a chance to jam with many of the players and see rock life up close. That intensity gave him the impression it could be too much of a good thing, so he turned his attention to his studies, becoming a psychologist—a career to which he's devoted 37 years. But the passion for music never left him.He continued to play with local bands, even laying down bass on a studio recording for Steve McKinney. Throughout, he's seriously studied his instrument with bass titan Anthony Wellington (featured in Victor Wooten's band and camps). As professional life winds down, Rob's deep, steady grooves are lifting off again—ready to rumble.
Chris – Lead Guitar Chris brings over 40 years of guitar wizardry and a Berklee College of Music degree. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, and Jimmy Page, he's played in countless bands across Boston, San Francisco, and now Charlottesville. Recently, he crossed into theater, adding guitar firepower to Kinky Boots at Live Arts (Charlottesville) and RENT at the Wayne Theater. His leads ignite with psychedelic fire, blues bite, and classic crunch.
Mark– Drums Mark grew up on golden oldies and '60s-'70s rock, expanding his drumming across global genres. He started at 14 jamming with family/friends, then joined a band post-high school that lasted an astonishing 12 years—recording albums, touring NYC clubs to rural East Coast festivals, and growing massively as musicians.
Next: high-energy wedding band The Ruckus (No. 1 voted in Lynchburg), where he focused on dynamic, precise playing for massive events and 500-guest weddings—always bringing the ruckus. The last 10 years have been centered on raising kids in a music-filled home. Now in Pack Of Wolves, Mark channels decades of hard work, pain, and growth into powerful, versatile grooves with something real to say—driving the pack forward.
Together, Pack Of Wolves fuses road-tested experience into fresh fire: originals with melody and bite, covers that surprise and honor the roots. From Northeast clubs to Southern stages, we're proving rock's spirit never ages. Catch us live in the Charlottesville area (and beyond)—we're howling, running, and just getting started (again)!
